There were 171 fatal injuries recorded compared to 147 the previous 12 months.
Industry experts are blaming the rise on cut backs in training and maintenance during the recession.
The construction and agricultural work sectors continue to top the tables as the most dangerous jobs with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reporting them as having a 'disproportionately high number of accidents.'
A spokesperson from the HSE said: "Britain can be proud that it has one of the best health and safety records in Europe but as the increase in the number of fatalities makes clear, we can never let up in our commitment to addressing the serious risks which continue to cause death and injury in workplaces"
