2012 record year for teachers’ compensation payouts

A teaching union has reported record amounts paid out in criminal injury compensation, unfair dismissal and workplace accident compensation last year as a result of incidents at school.

The NASUWT won £15.6million to compensation for the effects of accidents, injuries and assaults in 2012.

One teacher was awarded more than £382,000 when he injured his arm as it caught in a filing cabinet. The largest payout was for a school worker stepped in to help out a colleague and was subsequently kicked and attacked by 2 pupils.

A sum of £5.5 million in compensation has been claimed by The Association of Teachers and Lecturers.
