Blind Spot Accidents on the Rise

The Daily Telegraph has reported that blind spot related road accidents are on the rise due to the design changes in cars over recent years.

The accidents occur when drivers pull out to change lanes unaware there is a car in their blind spot. Staggeringly after a review of 50,000 separate road accidents, figures show they increased by 48% between 2008 and 2011.

Executive Director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety Robert Gifford commented on the findings:

“Visibility and awareness are key contributors to maintaining safety,” he said.

“All drivers need to be aware that every vehicle has its blind spots and that these will always be different.”

“That is why some car manufacturers such as Volvo have developed blind spot information systems.”
