Dentist struck off by GDC for putting 1000’s of patients at risk

Shamed dentist Desmond D’Mello has been officially struck off by General Dental Council for numerous failings in his working practices. The dentist was exposed back in 2014 after secret filming of his practices revealed a serious lax in hygiene standards.

He was accused of not changing gloves, wearing a face mask, sterilising equipment properly and keeping accurate records amongst other the conduct failings.

The whistle blowers film was shown to the GDC which then initiated one of the biggest patient recalls in English history with over 22,000 patients being called and 4,500 tested for blood born diseases.

The GDC chair of the panel assessing D’Mello’s case said his practices were “fundamentally incompatible with being a dental professional”.

Mr D’Mello did not attend the hearing.
