Engineering company fined after worker sustains crushing injuries to hands

The Health and Safety Executive have fined an engineering company for breaching health and safety regulations after one of its workers mangled his hand in some heavy machinery. The accident happened last year when a fabricator was working using a three roller bender for manufacturing aluminium and his glove got caught and dragged between two of the rollers.

A Magistrates’ Court heard how the 50-year-old employee sustained injuries including loss of the ring finger on his left hand and crushing injuries to his middle finger. The Health and Safety Executive investigation revealed that the risk assessment they conducted on the job was not sufficient or suitable and failed to identify problems with using gloves in the process.

The engineering company pleaded guilty to not properly assessing the risk of entanglement from wearing gloves and there was also no competent health and safety advice given at the company. The company pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety guidelines and was fined £16,000 and was also ordered to pay legal costs of £2,843.
