Man injured after falling down manhole

A man had to be rescued by fire crews after falling down a manhole and becoming stuck.

Firefighters were called to the incident at around 7.30pm when visibility was poor and had to use ropes and pulleys to get the man out of the hole.

The manhole cover is thought to have been stolen by thieves and when the daylight went it was only a matter of time before someone fell into it. The unsuspecting man fell five metres into the hole and broke several bones, he remained trapped in the hole for half an hour until fire crews rescued him.

The man was taken to hospital but did not have serious injuries.
