Paralysed accident victim moves arms after ground-breaking surgery

Ground-breaking surgery has given a paralysed man the ability to move his hands and arms again.

The surgery, which hit global headlines, has shown that the rewiring of nerves allowed surgeons to restore basic movement to limbs that have been paralysed by spinal chord injuries.

The 71-year-old patient had been left paralysed from the neck down after a serious car accident but in a world first, surgeons were able to successfully bypass the injury site by grafting arm nerves from below the injury to nerves above the injury.

The surgery was completed 23 months after the accident and after several months of therapy and training the accident victim can now handle objects and feed himself. Some reports suggest he can even complete basic writing.

Surgeons have said that due to the fantastic success of the operation, it could now be used as a blueprint for future operations although results could vary depending on the injury type.

If you have recently been injured in a car accident and you don’t feel it was your fault you could be entitled to compensation.
