Telecoms Company fined £1/2 million for workplace accident

The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) has investigated one of the biggest telecoms company in the UK for breaching health and safety laws after one of its employees fell from a height and broke his back.

A telecoms engineer fell 7 metres from a loft whilst he was fixing a telephone fault. He sustained injuries to his back and his ankles when he landed on a concrete stairwell.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) discovered a number of management failures throughout their investigation including inadequate planning of work and inadequate checking that work was being carried out safely.

The company was fined £500,000 after being found guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Safety and Health at Work etc. Act 1974. They were also ordered to pay costs of £98,913.51.

An HSE inspector said: “There were a number of failures of health and safety management by …which related to planning the work, supervision, and checking it was being carried out safely. Work at height needs to be properly planned, and this incident could have been prevented.”
