US Study Reveals Headphone Injuries on the Rise

A new US study has suggested that the number of people suffering from serious injuries whilst wearing headphones has tripled in the last 6 years.

Gadgets such as iPods and mobile phones are thought to be the most likely accessory to be used in combination with headphones.

The study, which took place between 2004 and 2011, uncovered 116 reports of death or injury from pedestrians wearing headphones.

As many as 89% of the cases occurred in urban areas, with more than half (55%) of the injuries a result of being hit by a train.

A spokesperson from the study said: “The use of headphones with handheld devices may pose a safety risk to pedestrians, especially in environments with moving vehicles. Further research is needed to determine if and how headphone use compromises pedestrian safety.”
