Worker has fingers amputated after workplace accident

A man has been left with serious injuries to his hand after his glove got stuck in machinery.  The employee, who was using a straightening machine for flattening coils of silver, has had to have 2 fingers removed from his right hand after his glove got caught on a jagged coil and was pulled into some machinery crushing four of his fingers. As a result of the accident the silver manufacturing company has been investigated by the HSE which found that there were insufficient safety precautions in place for using the machinery safely, which ultimately led to the employee sustaining serious injury.

The HSE presented their findings to the Crown Court and the company pleaded guilty to an offence under Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and was fined a total of £10,000, and ordered to pay £6,445 in costs.
