Worker sustains crushing injury to his hand

A company has been fined £15,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,332 after one of its employees sustained serious injuries to his hand after it slipped under the guard of a cutting press.

The man’s hand was trapped between the machine bed and cutting plate holder which crushed his hand causing extensive damage. Whilst the injuries were serious, they were not life threatening. The HSE investigation that followed found that the correct guards were not in place and therefore found the company guilty of breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act, 1974.
